FRV is proposing to add a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to the existing Goonumbla Solar Farm on Henry Parkes Way, approximately 5 km west of Parkes in NSW. Goonumbla Solar Farm has been operational since 2020 and is now one of three utility-scale solar farms providing the region with a source of renewable energy.

Given the abundance of solar energy, there are times that the region produces more energy than the grid requires. A BESS is being proposed to capture energy at times of low demand to be released when its most needed. For example, the battery could store surplus solar power generated in the middle of the day and send it back to the grid during evening peak periods, when the sun isn’t shining. This provides greater stability to the grid, improving energy security and further reducing Australia’s reliance on fossil fuels. You can read more about BESS technology here.

The proposed BESS would have a capacity of up to 140 MW and store between four and eight hours of electricity, which is enough to power over 83,000 average NSW homes. FRV is proposing to construct the BESS on land located entirely within the existing solar farm.

The project is currently in its early stages. FRV has begun preparing detailed environmental and technical studies, and is actively engaging with the local community, key stakeholders and authorities. This feedback will help shape the project’s design as it progresses.

To enable construction of the BESS, FRV will seek to modify its existing development approval. FRV currently aims to lodge a Modification Application with the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI) in late 2026, following completion of the detailed studies and consultation with the community.

As part of the project, FRV will also establish a Community Benefits Fund in partnership with Parkes Shire Council. Funds would be directly invested into local initiatives and infrastructure based on feedback from the community. FRV will be seeking community and Council input throughout 2026 on how this on the fund will be implemented.
